Brookings, South Dakota -- With overwhelming support from in and out-of-state Dairy Industry Partners that represent the Jackrabbit Dairy Council, the Dairy Plant Modernization project at SDSU has moved into a construction phase with a ground breaking ceremony planned for May 7, 2010.
Jackrabbit Dairy Council members that represent the Midwest, Southwest and Pacific Northwest regions have finalized design plans and look forward to putting shovels to work this summer. Corporate and private council members include The American Dairy Association of SD/Midwest Dairy Association, Davisco Foods International, Ecolab, Glanbia Foods USA, Hilmar Cheese, Jerry Lohr, Max Gonzenbach, SA Education Foundation, South Dakota State University and Valley Queen Cheese.
Jon Davis, Chief Operations Officer at Davisco Foods International, Inc. said about the event, "This groundbreaking signifies the overwhelming support that we've received from our industry partners. As we reach out to the council members and their respective communities, there is a significant amount of excitement for the opportunities this project will provide for the students in the local high schools of our various regions in which the Jackrabbit Council Members do business." Davis added, "As a result of these collective efforts we can ensure an avenue for the continued success of graduates in Dairy Science from South Dakota State University, and the future success of the Jackrabbit Council Members, and the dairy industry as a whole."
Mark Leddy, CEO at Valley Queen Cheese Factory, "Our goal was to provide the Dairy Science students with a facility that will enhance dairy processing education and research at the college. We're committed to helping these students be academically and technically prepared for careers in the industry."
The net estimated cost of the project is approximately $9.3 million, for building and equipment. The project includes an addition of approximately 10,000 square feet and remodeling of the existing dairy plant area of 7,050 square feet.
