Paris, France -- Minnesota-based Davisco Foods International, Inc. was among six finalists for the prestigious "Most Innovative Food Ingredient Award" at the Fi Europe '99 Awards dinner on September 15, 1999 in Paris. The company's groundbreaking hydrolyzed whey protein that has proven in preliminary studies to reduce angiotensin, and therefore reduce hypertension, earned Davisco a spot among the finalists.
"We are very excited that Fi Europe '99 has recognized our revolutionary hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, which has the potential to become one of the most significant whey proteins in the new millennium," said Marty Davis, general manager of Davisco.
Davisco recently filed for a patent for this food ingredient, which is a highly purified whey protein isolate that is hydrolyzed under highly controlled conditions. The enzymatic treatment to the whey proteins produces antihypertensive peptides, which suppress angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE).
Davisco and Advitech submitted the hydrolyzed whey protein isolate-601, 603K, and 605K to the international competition and were among six finalists chosen. The winners were announced at a gala dinner on September 15, 1999 at Le Pre Catalan, in Paris, France.
While other companies have attempted to develop similar hydrolyzed whey protein isolates, laboratory tests showed that Davisco's whey protein isolates 601, 603K, and 605K provided uniquely effective sources for the ACE-inhibiting food ingredient.
The product is used as an ingredient in nutritional supplements, infant formulas, sports drinks, and meal substitutes for weight-reduction programs.
"Davisco has long been on the cutting edge of food science," said Dr. Anand Rao, director of quality and analytical research for the company. "This product has the potential to bring to consumers the food additive that helps combat one of the nation's most destructive health problems."
Davisco Foods International, Inc. is a family-run company headquartered in Le Sueur, Minnesota, and is the leader in the production of whey protein isolates worldwide with facilities in Jerome, ID; Lake Norden, SD; and Le Sueur, MN; and offices in Mexico City, New York, NY and near Los Angeles, California. The company is 55 years old and processes 8 million pounds of milk daily.
